On Saturday night, after dinner with friends at Dos Gringos in Mt. Pleasant, while making my way to Irvine Contemporary for an exhibit opening featuring work by José Parlá, Swoon, Shepard Fairey, and Rostarr, I stopped by Palace 5ive a few minutes before closing and picked their last copy of the Cuba chapter of Frank. Like all chapters of Frank I’m finding it pretty hard to put down. Along with the article I mentioned about Gille’s Peterson’s “new Cuba sound“, there’s an interesting article by Helena Kubicka de Bragança called Los Frikis about the ongoing rock & punk anti-government movements in Cuba. There’s also a great interview Ulpiano Sergio Reyes aka Mellow Man Ace (brother of Cypress Hill’s Sen Dog) did on his father Cirillo Reyes asking him about his former life in Cuba and moving to the US in beginning of the ’70s. You can read most of the Chapter 42: Cuba online or download it as a PDF.
